When standing on the top of Buckner Hill, it seems one can see "forever." From up there, our valley is a patchwork quilt, changing colors with the seasons. Much like a timeless patchwork quilt, the Buckner area is rich in history. Thousands of years ago the Missouri River flowed where the City of Buckner now stands. The Osage Indians once populated the Buckner area and The Historic Fort Osage is located in nearby Sibley which was founded by Lewis and Clark. Buckner is also rich in history because it is located where the Sante Fe Trail passed through years ago. In the late 1950's, Wilson Lasater advertised his Ford Dealership over the radio waves throughout the Kansas City Metropolitan area as being located in "The Little Village in the Valley," Buckner, Missouri. Today many people still refer to Buckner as "The Little Village in the Valley" because this phrase accurately describes the town. "The Little Village in the Valley" is home to many residents who enjoy the "small town" or "country" living with all the benefits of access to the greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. Located in northeastern Jackson county, approximately, 25 miles east of the Kansas-Missouri state line and three miles south of the Missouri River, Buckner has a population of 2,876. Buckner is located in the Fort Osage School District and the Fort Osage Fire Protection District. The pro-business outlook makes Buckner a prime place to locate. The businesses that are in Buckner, are very much like a "patchwork quilt" because they represent a wide variety of services that make Buckner a unique place to live and conduct business. All utilities are available and transportation is accessible via 24 Highway, just eight miles north of the Interstate 70, and state highway BB (Buckner-Tarsney Road). The Union Pacific Railway also runs through the city. In addition to interstate and rail access, Buckner also has access to air travel, because the Grain Valley Airport is just eight miles away.
The City of Buckner provides many amenities for its citizens. A
20-acre city park provides many athletic opportunities as well as picnicking
and swimming, provided through the Buckner Youth Club, Inc. Buckner's own police department provides for a safe, secure community. Among other services available to the residents of Buckner, The U.S. Post Office, constructed in 1986, serves the growing community. A weekly newspaper provides local news and advertising with several other newspapers serving the area. Buckner's "patchwork quilt" also encompasses the social aspects of the town. An active senior citizens group meets for meals and activities in the senior center. Some 15 churches serve Buckner and the surrounding community. There are also several service and social organizations that allow this community to blend together. Whether a citizen wants to attend a community fish fry, an auction, a youth ball game in the park, or a town festival; Buckner's social aspects include all age groups. In many ways Buckner has the best of two worlds, in that it is minutes away from a large metropolitan area with varied activities, and yet, it retains the peace and quiet of a small town. Buckner blends its' patchwork quilt to create a community rich in possibilities. |
