| You must have a sound card, speakers
and a MIDI music player or "plug-in" to hear them while you're
on-line.
I'm using a Soundblaster 32, AWE-32 PnP sound card from Creative Labs with Altec Lansing ACS53 speakers and are very happy with them so far. There are even fancier versions if your computer can handle them. I have heard The AWE-64 is great. I'm using a U. S. Robotics 33,600 kbps modem which is more than adequate for listening to MIDI's while you're on line. I would have purchased the 56,000 kbps unit if my local phone system could handle it.
I'm using the Crescendo "MAX" plug-in for My on-line
MIDI player In both my Netscape, AOL And MS IE web browsers and
all of my web pages that involve MIDI files are optimized for the use
of Crescendo browser plug-in's. Other plug-in's that you might
be using, should work, but probably not as good and do not offer
streaming. The "MAX" version must be purchased but Live-Update Crescendo also has various free ones which you can download and install. After you install your plug-in you can then hear most MIDI music that is on a web sites page whether it is embedded music or a "click on" file name. When you download the browser plug-in be very sure you get the right version for your particular browser. There are 16 bit and 32 bit versions for various browsers. One of the biggest advantages of purchasing the Crescendo "Plus" Or Crescendo "MAX" Webmaster version is that you get them all in one download. MIDI files might not play on line with AOL's older built in browser, depending on the version of AOL you are using. You will definitely have on line sound problems if you have anything less than version 3.0. If you do not have it I would highly recommend upgrading to AOL's Windows 95/98 version which currently includes Microsoft Internet Explorer, as a built in browser. While connected to AOL you can also minimize your AOL screen and open your stand-a-lone version of Netscape or MSIE - (If you also have them on your computer).
See The buttons below to get the latest versions
of their browsers. You will, of course, already have Windows 95 Or Windows 98! If you do not have Windows 95-98 you should consider upgrading if your computer has the disk space and speed to handle it. Check carefully, sometimes you can purchase a brand new computer for nearly the same price as it would cost to upgrade and many times the browsers you need will be pre-installed with the software package you get with the new computer. If, at the present time, you can't hear the tunes on line you still should be able to download the files and play them locally with the Windows built in Media Player or Sound Recorder as long as you have a sound card and speakers installed. These files are usually in the Windows directory, of your hard drive. (The file name for the Media Player is mplayer.exe). (The file name for the Sound Recorder is sndrec32.exe). You may need to do a search on your hard drive for them.
